Feng Shui - What's it all about?

The first time someone asked me how long I had been doing Feng Shui, I immediately answered that I had been doing Feng Shui my whole life, only now I was taking myself seriously and offering  it professionally.

I remember, as a small child, being very affected by my environment, and moving things around, arranging them, all the time. I actually thought that I was a little nuts. Certainly, my family did. And then, many years later, I was sitting in an acupuncturist's office, waiting for my appointment, and I picked up a book about Feng Shui. It was an "Aha!" moment. I had been doing all these things the book was talking about my whole life, and now, here it was in front of me, being portrayed as both a science and an art. I wasn't crazy after all! I was just ahead of my time.
 
We need Feng Shui in our lives. We need to be able to create environments for ourselves that reflect back to us who we are and what we stand for. In a world filled with so many questions, we need to know our own inner answers.

Our homes have become our havens. We can look at the metaphor of our lives, through Feng Shui Eyes? and see what we are producing. We can decide if what we are calling in energetically is what we want, or if it's something that we actually need to get rid of. It is so empowering to consciously remove things in our environment because we have become aware of the negative effects it is having on us.

What Has Your Furniture Done For You Lately?

Often times I am approached by someone who has just read their first book about Feng Shui, and now they are worried that their whole house is wrong. They're actually a little panicked.  My job is to translate for them.

Feng Shui is a 5000 year old Chinese tradition. It doesn't necessarily convert entirely to the Western world and way of life.
Like religion, and like many other traditions in the world, as things change, so do the rules. Or, we change the rules to fit our lives better.

The basic premise of Feng Shui is that everything is alive and everything is talking to you. Even inanimate objects have something to say! Inevitably, with my combined background of Feng Shui and Applied Spiritual Psychology, whenever I enter an environment it starts to tell me a story. Most people treat their furniture in a passive way when in reality your furniture plays a more active role than you might think. In fact, your furniture and accessories either work for you, or against you. Picture your furniture and the placement of your furniture as a verb, What is the placement of this desk doing? What is the way it's facing accomplishing?

The purpose of Feng Shui is to help one feel more balanced, energized and in harmony with their environment. It is believed that your environment is a reflection of your life. If you are not happy in your home, you may not be happy in your life. Or, perhaps your inner unhappiness is being expressed or reflected in your home. It's a vicious circle.

My unconventional advice to you is to work backwards. Distill down to the true essence of Feng shui.

Take what you read about Feng Shui with a somewhat grain of salt; this ancient art was given birth to in China and like a book that  is later made into a screenplay for a movie, there is always a shift in the translation.

Working backwards, what is it in your life that you would like to change? What's not working for you? Where is this being reflected in your environment? Think of  Behavior modification. Begin by first, achieving an awareness of the change you'd like to see, and then doing something to your environment that is proactive towards that.

Sometimes the worst thing that you can do is buy a book about Feng Shui and then go by the book, because it wasn't written with you in mind!
